Progressive evangelical puts faith into action

As a young preacher, Jim Wallis stammered his way into a sermon at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Martin Luther King Jr.'s home congregation.

Coaxed on — "Preach it now!" — by an old man in the "amen corner," Wallis gradually gained power "until I was proclaiming, prancing, sweating."

At the sermon's end, he rushed to the deacon and gasped, "You pulled that sermon out of me!"

Today, the politically progressive evangelical who put global warming at the top of his religious agenda pulls that same excitement from the thousands who flock to his talks.

"Social movements do that," he said. "They pull out our better angels."

In this campaign season, he said, "the country wants candidates who appeal to our better angel."

Visiting the Bay Area earlier this month, Wallis exhorted an atypically young crowd at the Episcopal Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, held forth at First Congregational Church in Berkeley, talked faith and politics with KGO's Ronn Owens and spoke to crowds at his book signings.

Wallis launched Sojourners, a global network of liberal Christians. He has just written "The Great Awakening: Reviving Faith and Politics in a Post-Religious Right America." His best-selling "God's Politics" fired up those who despaired that the right had commandeered the role of faith in public life. His zeal for social action sprang from dissatisfaction with his faith.

Approaching his pastor about civil rights and segregation, he was stunned when the minister waved his concerns aside, saying political matters have no connection with faith.

"I want people to participate," he said in an interview in San Francisco. "I think it is a moral imperative (to vote), but voting is just the beginning. You vote with your feet, you vote with your lives, you vote with your money, you vote with your convictions."

The coming presidential election offers "the clearest choice yet" for the nation's direction, and "this time young people are very involved. Barack (Obama) in particular is bringing in a lot of young people."

Wallis recently spoke to 45,000 teens at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio.

He said he believes in the separation of church and state, but not the segregation of moral values from public life.

"In an election like this, there shouldn't be a religious litmus test. The question is, what is their moral compass?"

The religious right is still alive and well, he noted, with immigration taking the role played in 2004 by gay marriage.

But religion will play a different and better role in this election, he said. Many evangelicals, especially younger believers, take a broader view of the society and the world.

"The bigger issue is the change in the agenda," he said. "Poverty wasn't a religious issue. It is now. The environment wasn't a religious issue. It is now. Darfur, foreign policy, those weren't issues then. They are now. It's a profound sea change."

Wallis is touring 20 cities in six weeks. The 59-year-old Little League coach and father of 4- and 9-year-old boys said he is energized by the crowds who come to see him . He has been arrested numerous times demonstrating for myriad causes, and he has arranged truces between gangs.

"I joke that that got me ready to work with churches."

He speaks to many Christian churches but has also addressed a convention of rabbis and invited progressive Muslim Daisy Khan to speak to a class he teaches at Harvard University.

Former President Carter wrote the forward to his new book, but Wallis' favorite president is Abraham Lincoln.

"He used to say, 'Don't ever think God is on your side. Pray earnestly that you are on God's side.'

"There's a religion that leads to an easy certainty versus a deep reflection. George Bush is so sure of himself. The most frightening thing about him is, when he is asked what mistakes he thinks he has made, he never comes up with anything. That's alarming."

In his book, Wallis bemoans what he describes as the rootlessness of the 1960s student anti-war movement. He blames an inherent self-interest for the crumbling of the movement after the draft ended. "The desire to build a framework for social action led me back to my faith," he said.

He has found that he tapped into a common feeling rather than instigating it.

"When you show up to a book signing, and there's a thousand people there, you know there's more happening than your book."
