In the shadow of the war between Israel and Hezbollah, the conflict over Iran's desire to achieve a nuclear weapons capability continues. The government of Iran seems determined to proceed with its nuclear program, and the U.S. is determined to stop them. The Bush administration has refused to rule out the use of military force against Iran. While we agree Iran should not obtain nuclear weapons or support terrorism, we come together as religious leaders to urge that the U.S. engage in direct negotiations with Iran as an alternative to military action in resolving the crisis.

We are encouraged that the U.S. government is cooperating with European countries and international agencies. While we welcome the U.S. willingness to join multilateral talks with Iran, we believe that a strategy of direct U.S. diplomatic engagement with Iran without preconditions is the surest means of reducing the nuclear danger and enhancing security in the region. Pragmatically and morally, such direct negotiations offer the only realistic way to resolve this crisis. Many experts agree that military action would prove both ineffective and disastrous.

Faithful Security and Sojourners invite you to join us - as heads of denominations, Jewish and Muslim leaders, seminary presidents, leaders of national faith-based organizations, theologians, and clergy - in signing the "Words, Not War" statement. Together, we could have an impact on our country choosing the way of peaceful resolution rather than another disastrous war.
