Coburn Seven

AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis – these three diseases cause more than 90 percent of all deaths from infectious diseases around the world. The United States must continue to be the global leader in combating these pandemics.

A bill that will help fight these diseases passed in the House and has strong presidential support - but seven senators known as the “Coburn Seven” have blocked it from coming to a vote in the U.S. Senate.

The Coburn Seven are playing ideologically driven politics with the lives of millions of people affected by deadly diseases. This bill will expire in September, but the Senate must act now.

Take action today to stop these obstructionist senators and unblock this bill.

As a person of faith, I am proud of our country's leadership in combating the global AIDS crisis through PEPFAR and similar aid programs. During the past five years, we've saved millions of lives around the world through treatment and prevention, and local health care infrastructure has improved.

I am writing to urge you to cosponsor and support passage of S. 2731, the Global AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria bill. The House has already passed the bill, but despite strong bipartisan and presidential support it is being held up in the Senate by seven senators.

I respect the Senate rules that allow minority objections, but the moral cost of stalling this bill is astronomical. It is our responsibility to ensure that life-giving treatment and services are not interrupted due to political games.

Passing the Global AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis Bill before President Bush attends the G8 meeting in July will provide the leverage he needs to gain similar funding commitments from partner nations.

Please contact Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and ask them to allow a full vote on the bill this month.

It often seems that we read only bad news, but these comprehensive prevention and treatment programs are doing good work and making a difference in combating these deadly diseases. I pray you will consider my request and do everything in your power to pass S.2731.
