On September 16, by a 53-41 vote, the Senate voted against an
amendment to cut funding for new nuclear weapons out of the
energy and water appropriations bill. (S 1424). They accepted,
however, an amendment to allow research only - not development - of
new nuclear weapons.
If the Administration decides to actually
begin developing these weapons, they must return to Congress for
another vote. As the House of Representatives did cut most of the
funding from their bill, the differences will now go to a conference committee.

Even though the Senate vote failed, we will continue to work against a
